The Algerian dinar (code: DZD) is the official currency of Algeria and has been in use since 1964. It is divided into 100 centimes, although centime coins are no longer in widespread circulation due to inflation and the country's transition to a more capitalist economy.
The Algerian coin series minted in 1964 included denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 centimes, as well as 1 dinar. These coins were introduced as a new currency for the country and were designed to replace the previous French colonial currency.
These 1964 minded coins obverse of these coins features the emblem of Algeria, which consists of a five-pointed star within a solid circle, surrounded by a crescent, and below a representation of the throne of the country's king. On the reverse coins displays the value of the coins in Eastern Arabic numerals.
In 1992, a new series of coins was introduced in Algeria consisting of denominations of 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dinars.
The latest series of Algerian dinar coins includes denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50 dinars. These coins are bimetallic, with a brass outer ring and a nickel-plated steel center.
The obverse of the coins features the emblem of Algeria, which consists of a front-facing eagle with wings spread, surrounded by a wreath of wheat and oak leaves.
The reverse of the coins features the denomination in Eastern Arabic numerals and the national motto, "By the People and For the People," in Arabic script. The designs on the reverse are intended to symbolize the country's strong sense of national unity and commitment to its people.
In addition to their standard designs, some of the latest Algerian dinar coins have been issued with commemorative themes, such as the 50 dinar coin which was minted in 2012 to commemorate Algeria's 50th anniversary of independence. These commemorative coins offer a unique opportunity for collectors to own a piece of the country's history and heritage.
